Know Your Rights

Everybody has rights as a person and as an employee.  The Employment Standards Act explains the minimum standards that apply to workpaces in British Columbia.  It discusses what you should expect from your employer in areas such as minimum wage, breaks, vacation time, overtime, statutory holidays and uniforms.

The BC Human Rights Code explains how you should be treated as a person.  In the world of work this means you should not be discriminated against because of race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, political belief, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation or age of that person or because of an unrelated criminal offence.  This especially applies to who employers hire, how much they pay and why they terminate employment.

Every person has rights.  If you think your rights may have been violated you first need to know your rights.  Check out the Employment Standards Act and BC Human Rights CodeIf you have a complaint then contact either the BC Human Rights Tribunal or the BC Employment Standards Branch.

You need to know your rights so you can participate fully in your life at home, at work in your community.  Get to know your rights today!
