Customized Employment

Customized Employment is a program for persons with disabilities that uses a unique process for learning about an individual’s unique strengths, abilities, interests and needs. Observation of the person in a variety of situations and consultation with support people provides the feedback needed to create a vision of the ideal work tasks and conditions.  This process is called Discovery.  Paid employment is sought by shaping the relationship between the job seeker and an employer in ways that meet the needs of both, creating a match through Job Carving.

Literacy & Essential Skills Works

The objectives of this project are to:

1)       Test the effectiveness of infusing literacy and Essential Skills training into current Life Skills curriculum utilized by both Community Assistance programs for adults and Life Skills Programs for at-risk youth.

2)       Increase the community participation and employability of adults and youth facing societal barriers through improved literacy and essential skills.

The project operates with a number of strategic community partners including: Literacy BC, City of Surrey, The Phoenix Society, Douglas College, Surrey Public Library, Centre of Integration for African Immigrants, South Fraser Community Services Society, and the White Rock Community Literacy Team.

The Literacy & Essential Skills Works Project will evaluate the effectiveness of existing resources and curriculum in at least two targeted Community Assistance and Skills Link Programs and will look at ways of adapting literacy and essential skills curriculum and resources in areas where a traditional approach may not be effective. The results of the research will be part of an expanded Passport to Literacy and Essential Skills website (located at www.passporttowork.ca).
